I don’t consider aerial photography to be a primary part of my photographic practice; however, a drone provides an opportunity to capture landscapes from different perspectives and in different light. Iceland Early Spring, San Gimignano and Atrani are good examples of how an elevated viewpoint can reveal a landscape in ways that are difficult to achieve from the ground.

I generally prefer an angled view from above, where the elevated perspective still provides a sense of place and landscape, rather than the more abstract, directly downward view. However, with the extraordinary opportunities presented by Lake Tyrrell and similar locations, it is difficult not to experiment with more abstract interpretations.

I am also becoming better at using the drone to find and compose images in the field, rather than discovering the image later in post-production. That is an important part of the learning process and is helping me become more deliberate about why I choose a particular aerial perspective.

All of my drone photography is undertaken in accordance with the applicable local regulatory requirements for capturing aerial images.
